The Bugbear Warrior doesn't kill you, it takes you away
How to run it. 33 Hit Points, AC 14, Stealth +6, Darkvision. Its Grab has 10-foot reach, +4 for 2d6 + 2, and a Medium or smaller target is Grappled (escape DC 12). Its Light Hammer, also 10-foot reach or thrown at 20/60 feet, does 3d4 + 2 and has Advantage against the creature it is holding.
The rule that matters. Abduct: it moves a grappled creature without spending extra movement. So on its turn it grabs the wizard from behind the fighter, walks 30 feet into the dark at full Speed, and the wizard goes with it. Next turn the hammer comes with Advantage.
| Target AC | Hammer hits | With Advantage |
|---|---|---|
| 14 | 55% | 80% |
| 16 | 45% | 70% |
| 18 | 35% | 58% |
Escaping DC 12 takes 40% of attempts at −1, 55% at +2, and 70% at +5, and each try costs the captive's action.
Rules worth knowing. In the 2024 rules the bugbear is a Fey (Goblinoid), not a Humanoid, so Hold Person cannot target it. It carries three Light Hammers, so it can throw two and still fight.
The common mistake is running it as a slow brute that stands in line. Its whole kit says ambush: high Stealth, long reach, and a trait for carrying people off. Hide two in the rafters.
For players. Keep the fragile ones out of 10-foot reach, not 5-foot. If someone is taken, chase together; a split party is what it wants.
The human angle. Kipling Williams and colleagues had people play a simple online ball-tossing game, then left some of them out. Even a few minutes of exclusion by strangers lowered their sense of belonging. A player whose character is dragged away from the group, alone in the dark, feels that at once, and so does the table.
