Where the d6 shows up
- Weapons. Shortsword, scimitar, handaxe, javelin, mace, spear and shortbow: 1d6 each.
- Fireball. 8d6 fire damage in a 20-foot radius, half on a successful Dexterity save. Set the dice count above to 8 and see what the wizard would have done.
- Sneak Attack. A rogue adds 1d6 at 1st level and one more d6 at every odd level after, up to 10d6 at 19th.
- Hit dice. Sorcerers and wizards roll a d6 for hit points each level.
- Old-school stats. 3d6 in order was how characters were made for years. It averages 10.5, and rolling an 18 happens about once in 216 tries. The modern habit of rolling four and dropping one has its own page.
Many d6 at once
Big damage in D&D mostly means more d6s, not bigger dice. More dice also means the total clusters near the middle: one d6 is as likely to show 1 as 6, but 8d6 lands between 22 and 34 far more often than near 8 or 48.
